Katie L Clark

I'm now spending more and more of my time every day on social media. I've been expanding my social media platforms recently and have just added Pinterest to my list of social media networks that I've been focusing on recently.

Spending more time online, I've noticed so many things about social media... some things I love, and other things that I'm not so keen on! So hopefully this post should act as a conversation starter, I'd love to know what things you've all been noticing as well!

Before I get on with the post, you may have noticed that I've changed my post photo graphic! I'm just trying out something new, hopefully, this fits in better with my current blog theme and my own personal style! But some feedback would be awesome, it's always a work in progress and I'm constantly making changes and updating things!

For as long as I can remember I've loved tiny spaces. When I was a little kid I loved hanging out in our shed. Yep. That's right. In the shed. I used to take out the bikes and things we stored in there and popped in chairs and things to make my own little space. I had one of those plastic toy houses in the garden... I just loved having my own little space. I've never been fussed about having a big space, just a little den to call my own.

A few years ago I discovered the tiny house movement, and literally dived in head first. I feel like I'm at a point now where I've pretty much seen it all, my largest Pinterest board is my tiny spaces one... I've watched almost every tiny house/RV/camper tour I can find.

I just wanted to use this post to explain my reasons why I want to live tiny. I'm not trying to convert anyone to tiny house living, because I know it's not for everyone. I just wanted to share something I really love and explain to you guys why I love it so much!

I've really been loving podcasting at the moment. I used to always use YouTube whenever I wanted to listen to something in the background... but I've recently taken to listening to podcasts instead at the moment. I've got a bit of a variety... but here are the ones I've been enjoying at the moment!

I've been changing up my skincare routine quite a bit recently. I'd simplified my routine to give my skin a bit of a detox, and then take a look and re-evaluate my skincare routine. This is the stage I'm at right now, I'm sure it'll change a lot even from this... I'm always looking for new products and ways to make my routine easier and more simple.

At the moment, I'm focusing on my skin texture, ensuring that my skin is properly exfoliated and moisturised!

I have sensitive-combination skin. I have an oily t-zone and under eye area. I suffer from a ridiculously dry forehead... and I try to not use too many perfumed products.

It's no secret I've had my hands full over the last year. I've been unwell, I've had a number of breakdowns and dealt with a lot of stress. I've had a lot of toxic people in my life - who are thankfully all gone now. Thankfully, we're all good now. Thanks to an awesome group of friends, followers and things... I'm now feeling and doing great.

So now I want to share what I've learned with you guys.

Ok, hopefully, 3rd time lucky for this post. I've rewritten it so many times because there's just so much to talk about. It's so hard to find where to start! So instead of one mammoth sized post, I'm going to make this into a mini-series. Today I'll just share some basics, then I'll do posts on specific groups later!

So there's probably one of two reasons why you've clicked on this post:
  1. You're interested in K-pop/have seen it in the news and you're wondering what the hype is all about.
  2. You're a K-pop fan and you've just come to join in the fun!
Hopefully, by the end of this post, you'll have an overview of the past 10+ years of the K-pop world and you can navigate your way through the chaos. I'm aiming to break down the Korean music industry into an easy to manage post, explain the genre and industry to an English speaking audience... and let's just see what happens! Let's go for it!

I've been spending a lot of time working on my interior decor, last year I moved out of my flat and back into my parent's house. Back to the bedroom, I've lived in for the past 15 years. It obviously needed a refresh and to adapt to my lifestyle now.
So I've been making plans and started making changes on my bedroom and bathroom. Rather than going out and getting everything at once, I've been collecting items as I've been finding them. So it's taking a little longer, but then I know I'm getting the pieces that I actually want.

So, my computer broke. I'm writing this now as I'm installing all of the updates that should hopefully solve my problems. I've spent the past week working as my own IT support service - knowing very little about actual computer systems. Fingers crossed it works, if not... I'm getting a batch of posts written now whilst I've got a connection and that should keep me covered just in case!

Note to self: always ensure the computer is properly working and always have a backup plan!

But, on with the post!

I love looking at routines, maybe I'm just nosey.... but I love seeing what people are up to, what products they're using and things! So why not share my routine? So here are 5 things I do before going to bed at night:

1. Skincare Routine

First thing's first, I go through my skincare routine. Which is usually pretty simple in the evening, I'll be posting an updated skincare routine next week though!
I usually just take my makeup off, use my toner and then pop on my sleeping mask. I'm not sure how much difference the mask actually makes, but it smells so good that I'm going to keep using it anyway!

I then try to remember to moisturise! I've got my hand creams and things next to my bed at the moment so I can remember to use it before bed.

2. Verse of the Day

I might do a separate post if anyone is interested, but aware that my blog doesn't focus on religious things!

I usually sit down and work on the verse of the day and my reading plans for the day. I use a combination of apps and notebooks for this and just try and work through different themes at a time.

But I can do separate posts if you guys are interested!

3. Catch up on Youtube

Once everything is sorted, I like to catch up on my YouTube subscriptions. I've been decluttering my subscriptions list so I'm not overwhelmed with content, so I usually only have a few videos to watch each day. So it's a manageable list! Sometimes there's nothing new, and sometimes I leave it all completely and just have an evening off my phone!

4. Plan for Tomorrow

At this point, I'm getting tired.... and it's time to get off the phone, so I grab my notebook and planner and sit down and work through my plans for the next day. I fill in bits that I had completed that day, I work on my goals and things. I'm also tracking my food at the moment, so I write all of my meals down and things. And just dump everything out of my brain!

5. Sleep Spray, Sleep Mask, Sleep!

Now I'm finally ready to sleep! I get my sleep spray and my sleeping mask and turn off the lights and hop into bed!
I'm a really light sleeper and I struggle to actually stay asleep, so I usually set up some background noise to try and help. I used to like using apps with white noise and things... but now I actually just put a fan on in my room because it's so hot anyway! Kill two birds with one stone and all...

But that's it! Pretty uneventful, sometimes I change it up a little... I used to do yoga before bed, but I'm finding I'm too tired by the evening to do that at the moment so that's moved to the morning for now! I've been really struggling with my sleep recently and am only getting around 3-5 hours of sleep a night... So,

What do you do to get ready to sleep each night? Do you have a night routine or just collapse in a heap at the end of the day?

I've been reflecting a lot recently. After finishing university I needed some time to recover, I'd had years and years of exams - 9 years of constant exams and coursework from GCSE to masters to be precise! And I just needed a break, I was having some health problems that had cropped up and just needed some thinking time. Time to actually make peace with me, and listen to the voice in my own head.

I knew where I was going in the long-term. I knew where I wanted to be in 10-15 years, I knew what my ultimate goals were. But I didn't have a plan for how to get there. So many people make 5-year-plans, I skipped that one and jumped straight to the long-term goals. Which in some ways was great, it gave me something to work for and a goal whilst I was at university. I woke up every day with a purpose. And I do believe we all need that. But it wasn't useful for day to day life.

Finding Purpose

It's important to have a reason to wake up in the morning, a reason to keep going and to push through whenever you're struggling. But these don't need to be huge goals. You don't need to sit down and write that you're working towards being president, that you're going to invent something life-changing.

Accountability

It's a case of knowing your own beliefs and values and sticking to them. I sat down and connected back with myself. As cliche as it sounds. I looked at my own actions and my beliefs and re-evaluated everything. Tried to justify all my beliefs to myself.

For example, I've been vegetarian my whole life. I never made the decision to become vegetarian, so I needed to sit down and re-evaluate. Make sure I had a reason for believing that and knew what decision I was making. I was holding myself accountable for my own decisions.

You can also apply this to religious beliefs, beliefs about how to live - do you want to buy or rent, how do you want to work?

Not going to get into my own personal views because this blog isn't focused on a debate of my own beliefs, I just want to help you all to be able to make these decisions and act as a prompt so you can also have thinking time!

Finding Joy

I've been reassessing everything. I've taken the words from Marie Kondo's Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up and applied it to everything, not just material possessions. We can declutter everything... commitments, relationships, all of the non-physical things in our lives.

I'm now in a position where I'm happy with the things in my life. I want everything I have. I love everything I have. I love all the people in it. And I now know I can give everyone and everything my full time and commitment... and that it's valued.

I really encourage you all to look at your lives, look at your average day. How much of that do you need to do? How much of it do you enjoy doing? How much of it is necessary?
Then look at relationships, do all of your friends help you grow and thrive? Is your relationship with your partner - if you have one - healthy? Try not to drive yourself insane, you'll know straight away. Just ask yourself whether it makes you happy. And cut out things that don't make you happy.

Learning To Be Me

I've really been learning what it means to be me, learning to be comfortable with my own skin. Making peace with myself. It was just a case of really looking into myself and realigning everything.

It's been a long process, I don't think I'll ever be finished because we always need to have an update as we grow and change! But this is my life now.

Hopefully, this one wasn't too heavy for you, are you facing clutter in your life? If you're finding it hard to balance everything, then maybe it's time to take a look and try and make your life a little simpler!
Have a lovely bank holiday weekend, and stay happy!

I managed to get my hands on the rest of the K-pop Collection from Primark! If you haven't checked out the first half of the collection you can find my review of those products here. I didn't end up getting the whole collection because were some items that didn't suit me when I swatched them or I didn't think I'd use them! And so my inner minimalist exercised some self-control and I just picked up a few items that I thought would be awesome for the summer.

I wanted to use all these products before reviewing them as well, so I could give a better idea of how they last and the consistency! It's sometimes hard to tell how good a product is going to be just from a swatch alone. So I'm reviewing these after a few days of using them.

Somewhere along the way blogging became boring. I had enough, it became a chore. Sharing content wasn't as exciting as when I started. I've been blogging properly now for 6 years - excluding my LiveJournal days... but we'll pretend that never happened. But my first beauty blog (the one before this) is now over 6 years old. I never thought I'd leave blogging.

But over the past year, I found it hard to post. I had plenty of ideas. I had plenty of drafts saved to my account. I've written plenty of posts. I had a blog post written on the current state of the K-pop industry... spent days researching things, hours writing it... but I was never satisfied. New information kept coming out, there was always more. I wanted it to be perfect. But it never was.

I was constantly worried about the quality of my posts. It's like I wanted each post to read like an academic essay. Grammatically perfect, structured well... but realistically, blogging isn't about that. You're not interested in grammar and structure... of course, it needs to read well and make sense, but I realized I didn't need to be a perfectionist. I didn't need to wake up at 5am and prepare myself for a blogging day - yes. I was seriously doing this for a while.

I was so excited when I saw this collection announced on Primark's Instagram page. The colors looked perfect for my style, the packaging was so cute! K-pop branding aside, it's an awesome collection and Primark have been smashing their beauty releases recently - The Nudes collection anyone?!

So I made a plan and popped over to the Primark at Rushden Lakes - side note, Rushden Lakes is beautiful! There's a great selection of shops and you can take a break and walk around the lake if you're feeling drained from shopping. So if you're near, go and check it out!

They didn't have the full collection, so I'm still hunting around to find the missing pieces - here's the full collection if you're interested - so many of these items would be awesome for traveling or for the summer... and so I'm definitely going on a scavenger hunt for the cushion blushers!

I love the minimalist aesthetic. I like clean lines, the lack of clutter. I love white space.

But I also love comfort. I love pretty things that make me happy.

For a while last year, I exercised a lot of self-control. I didn't decorate in the way I wanted to, I got rid of trinkets that just gathered dust. I didn't want to be surrounded by clutter. This is great in so many ways, I'm now able to focus on what's important to me. I have the time to enjoy life...but I still have plenty of possessions. I'm not an Instagram-worthy minimalist. I don't have white walls, with a white bed.... that has one pillow. I don't wear monochromatic clothes. I love patterns and color. And I'm happy to admit all of this, I'm happy to accept myself as I am.

I love watching Jenny Mustard and Rachel Aust, I love reading their content. But I don't want to recreate their lives.

In this chaotic age, where we're all balancing 101 different commitments and life things, slow living and minimalism are becoming ever more important.

I took up minimalism because I didn't want to deal with unnecessary stresses, but what areas am I minimising specifically?

It's been a tough week. Every week at the moment feels like a tough week. I haven't been posting particularly recently because I'm spreading myself thin enough already and blogging every few days would just be one too many things on my plate at the moment!

Life is chaotic. We all have 101 life problems that we don't share with each group of friends or work colleagues... and then it gets to a breaking point.
This week has been my breaking point.

Trying to juggle studying, working, friends, family, relationships, food, exercise, well-being.... the endless to-do list that never gets 100% finished. It seems like an impossible task. The things are too big and too complicated to achieve. So I break the list down into smaller, more manageable tasks.... which just makes the list longer and even more scary!

We're a few days into 2017. So far, I haven't started the year with the best start - so time to lose the saying "start how you mean to go on"... my family and I have been having a few set-backs to say the least, I had a huge upheaval and moved home twice in November.... mid-week as well. I've had a complete lifestyle change over the last month or two. So needless to say, blogging wasn't really a priority. I've written plenty of posts, but they're all stuck in draft stage.
I just haven't been in the right mindset. And that's ok.

2016 was a huge change for me. I've been making the transition into becoming a minimalist. My priority for 2016 was to declutter my whole life. That was a huge task, and at the same time I didn't want to be wasteful, so I was going in some categories (and still ongoing) for a long time!
Minimalism has become even more important for me now my life situation has changed and I'm now juggling more than I have ever before.

I recently received a package from SammyDress, containing a few items of clothing for me to try out! I picked out a dress and a skirt to show you guys today. They're included in my Autumn project 333 (which should have a lookbook coming soon)!

So here are the items! (Sorry for the different sized photos, but I wanted to try and capture the items better!)

Dear Lady on The Bus,

I've just got back from what is probably my worst day at University. This is my fourth year at University now, so putting this right at number 1 is probably quite a statement.

No, I didn't have a difficult lecture. No, I didn't fall out with friends. No, I didn't have a lecturer shout at me.

I have a back injury. It's not an injury you are able to see. I had an accident about 4 years ago where I slipped vertebrae. At the time it just felt like a severe muscle strain. I have a relatively high pain tolerance it seems, because it got worse and worse. To the point where I suddenly realised that I couldn't walk anymore.  And so, a few high courses of painkillers, a great physiotherapist and a lot of bed rest later, I can now walk. I swim, I go to the gym and I do martial arts. But that doesn't mean my injury has gone.

Since this pain has started, it's never 100% left. I've never been cured so to speak. I've healed, I've got better. But it's not gone.

I've had so many posts planned, so many half-written and left at the draft stage. But this is something that has been getting to me the last few days! The struggle to be zero-waste and reduce the amount of waste I am personally producing, but feeling like it's getting nowhere because everyone around me is just as wasteful as I used to be.

The Situation

I'm currently in self-catered halls at University. I share a kitchen with 10 others. We have a recycling bin and a glass bin in the kitchen (next to the regular food/other waste bin). And yet I seem to be the only one recycling! The University puts signs up around the kitchen advising people on how to dispose of their waste. And yet I see recyclable materials in the waste bin every day. It feels like such a basic problem. I'm not even asking for people to create less waste, just ask them to recycle the items that are able to be recycled!

The Solution

I'm still struggling with the solutions - hence the post, so any suggestions would be great! - but I'm just trying to do the KonMari lead by example method. In the same way that Marie Kondo says that we can't throw away and tidy up other people's possessions, I'm trying to just stick to the "right way" and disposing of all my waste items in the way that I should and recycling any waste I create.

The Struggle

I still feel like I create so much rubbish! Especially because I've been busy and disorganised recently, I can feel it creeping back up on me. It's so easy to slip into the habit of buying a pre-packaged lunch, or accepting a straw at a bar. Although people like Bea (zerowastehome) and Lauren (trashisfortossers) are literal life goals, it's definitely a project that can't be tackled overnight! Zero-waste skincare will definitely be coming next because I just need to get down to the last of the supplies I have now!

I've learnt that I definitely need to stay on top of this because trying to be zero-waste in the UK is definitely still difficult. So if anyone has any tips on how to get communal living done well I'd love to share tips!

About me

Welcome to my little corner of the Internet. I'm Katie, a philosophy and law graduate from the UK. This is my little life and style blog, where I discuss any issues I feel are important to me and those that interest me.

I love minimalism, I'm trying to decrease the amount of waste I produce and I've been vegetarian my whole life. And so there will be some posts on sustainability and things.

But I also love a lighthearted post every now and then. I love a good beauty post, I focus on skincare and occasionally I'll share my opinions on the Korean music scene from the perspective of an older, long-term fan of the genre.

There's a lot going on, it might be chaos... but this is me.

This is my life. Enjoy!
